Primary, secondary, and gift packaging options, MOQs, and stage-appropriate choices for Via Pureza (source).
Initial research
MOQs and cost ranges are indicative — get supplier quotes before committing to molds or print runs.
Two layers
- Primary — the container directly holding the product: bottle, jar, tube, pump dispenser, dropper
- Secondary — the outer box, sleeve, mailer
Both can carry brand identity. Primary cost and MOQ dominate early-stage decisions.
Primary packaging
| Format | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PET / HDPE bottles | Shampoos, body washes, lotions | Lightweight, durable, recyclable. Most affordable. |
| Airless pumps | Serums, creams with active ingredients | Protects formula from oxidation. Premium feel. |
| Glass bottles | Perfumes, premium serums, facial oils | Premium look. Heavier, fragile, higher cost. MOQ typically 3,000+. |
| Aluminum tubes | Lip balms, face creams | Sustainable, premium. Popular in clean beauty. |
| Pots / jars | Thick creams, masks | Plastic or glass options. |
Customization layers
- Adhesive labels — most flexible, lowest MOQ, works at small scale
- Screen printing — clean look, ~500-unit minimum
- Hot stamping — metallic embossing, very premium
- Frosted / matte finishes — premium without glass cost
Secondary packaging
| Type | Use case | Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Kraft boxes | Clean / natural positioning | Mid-tier, eco-friendly |
| Rigid boxes (cartonagem rígida) | Premium products | High-end, gift lines |
| Sleeve boxes | Versatile, stack-efficient | Mid-tier |
| Mailer boxes | E-commerce direct shipping | Growing trend |
Gift packaging
Gift sets typically combine: rigid branded box → tissue or crinkle paper fill → ribbon or seal → product inserts / cards.
Cost range (small scale, ~500 units): R$ 8–35 per unit depending on box quality and size. Suppliers: Fraspaper, Bepack Premium Packing, Box Card Embalagens, Up Box, MultiCaixas (see suppliers).
Permanent vs. seasonal: Seasonal gift sets (Natal, Dia das Mães, Marian feasts, baptisms, first communion) can be ordered campaign-by-campaign rather than held year-round. Treat seasonal gift sets as separate SKUs, not dynamic bundles, to keep inventory simple (product-direction).
MOQ reality check
| Component | Typical MOQ | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic bottles / jars (standard stock) | 100–500 units | Stock items, lower MOQ |
| Plastic bottles / jars (custom color / print) | 1,000–5,000 units | Screen print or custom mold |
| Glass bottles (stock) | 500–1,000 units | Import lead times 8–16 weeks |
| Glass bottles (custom mold) | 5,000–10,000 units | Expensive upfront mold cost |
| Secondary boxes (stock format, custom print) | 500–1,000 units | |
| Rigid gift boxes | 300–1,000 units |
Stage-appropriate packaging
Don't commit early
Lock packaging after formula, not before. Stage 1 MVP (artisanal, manufacturing) should use stock primary packaging with custom adhesive labels — adhesive labels can be reprinted overnight when you iterate on brand or copy. Custom screen-printed bottles tie you to 1,000–5,000 units of a specific bottle and SKU mix.
| Stage | Primary | Secondary |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 MVP | Stock bottle + custom adhesive label | None or mailer |
| Stage 2 PMF | Stock bottle + screen print or hot stamp | Stock box + custom print |
| Stage 3 Scaling | Custom-color stock or custom mold | Custom box; gift sets as permanent SKUs |
